MH16’s Manly Juniors do us proud at final round of State Championship
Last weekend saw the running of the final round of the 2011-2012 NSW Manly Junior State Championship at Point Wolstoncroft on beautiful Lake Macquarie.
Going into the final round MH16’s Jack and Flynn Twomey sailing 2766 “Tinny” held a two point lead over the fleet with 3 races to be completed. The Championship looked achievable as long as the boys sailed consistently over the weekend and added to their previous two “bullets” gained at their home round back in October.
As luck (and no small amount of sailing skill) would have it the boys achieved two firsts over the weekend but were unfortunately protested in race 7 which resulted in a disqualification and ultimately this would result in a hard fought 2nd place over all in the State Championship. Only 3 points separated the top 3 boats in the State after 9 races!
The Club would like to congratulate Jack and Flynn on an outstanding effort during the Championship especially considering their unbelievable effort of finishing second with a broken mast in a race at the round hosted Avalon Sailing Club back in November!
Also in the mix of results was MH16’s Matthew Willson and his crew Rory Williams sailing 2782 ”Fire Power”. Matthew and Rory achieved 10th place for the Championship and 2nd overall in the Junior Division for under 12 year olds. The boys also managed to take out 2nd place on Handicap for the Championship so finished with a swag of trophies!
MH16’s sailors George Richardson and Simon Flodin, 2738 “Moose Test”, Dylan Sharp and Jasper Stockley, 2675 “Aqua” and Francis and Davey McDonald, 2762 “Rat Pack”, also finished in the top 10 handicap places with a 6th, 7th and 10th respectively. A fine effort considering for most of them it was their first season of competitive sailing!
