Final round of Flying Eleven States throws up some surprises for MH16’s sailors
Last weekend saw the final qualifying heats and Championship races for the Flying 11, 2011-2012, NSW State Championship conducted at Cronulla Sailing Club.
The Club was represented by 8 boats in this all important regatta.
On Saturday the final 2 qualifying races were conducted prior to the fleet of 92 boats being split into Gold and Silver fleets.
After qualifying, MH16’s sailors Amelia Stabback and Finn Gilbert, 1329 “River Rat”, Matt Dubery and Lorane Gaborit, 1395 “Omniscient”, and Tiarne Hayes and Lyndon Howell, 1311 “Up Beat” found themselves competing in the Gold Fleet for the State Championship.
After some intense racing our Gold fleet sailors finished with 1329 “River Rat” 15th overall, 1395 “Omniscient” 33rd and 1311 “Up Beat” 44th. Not a bad effort for their first serious season in the Class.
In the Silver fleet MH 16s was represented by 5 boats; 1377 “Crash Ride” Dom Ellis and Francis McDonald, 1345 “Bambino” Ned Sykes and Charles Rickwood, 1386 “Special Ed “ Ed Halstead and David Penny, 1285 “Aquaholic” Alicia Watt and Sean Watt and 1376 “Rock Lobster” Ciara Kearns and Ben Burton.
In the first race of the Silver fleet final series MH16s took out the first 4 places, won by Dom and Francis in “Crash Ride”, which enabled our sailors to consolidate their overall standings. The final Silver fleet results after two races saw 1282 “Aquaholic” in 2nd place, 1345 “Bambino” in 3rd , 1377 “Crash Ride” 4th ,1386 “Special Ed” 6th and 1377 “Rock Lobster” 70th (Ciara did not compete at the Gosford round earlier in the season). Results were a combination of points earned at the previous round hosted by Gosford Sailing Club last December and points earned during the Cronulla round. Whilst the Silver fleet does not compete for the overall State Championship our sailor’s results bode well for an exciting future in the Flying 11 Class.
Of special note should be the fantastic result for 1345 “Bambino” Ned Sykes and Charles Rickwood who ultimately took out 2nd on Handicap overall in the entire 92 boat fleet and came home with a pile of bling for the efforts!
