Windsurfer 2013 NSW State Champions

Hugh Richardson and Carina Flodin

Last weekend the Club hosted the Windsurfer 2013 NSW State Championship for original and one design boards.

Despite not getting a race in on Saturday due to lack of breeze, Sunday saw 4 races completed which was sufficient to constitute a series.

Congratulations go to Hugh Richardson and Carina Flodin, (MH16's members and junior parents), who won their respective divisions in the Original Board class.

A great weekend was had by all and we look forward to hosting the Windsurfer Association in the future.

Sailing at Middle Harbour Skiff Club

With boats and programmes to take novice kids right through to top class skiffies, Middle Harbour Skiff Club boasts an impressive catalogue of talented sailors from World Champions, Americas Cup Winners, Olympic Gold Medalists to National Champions.

Saturday Senior Skiff Racing

16 Foot Skiffs

Racing each saturday from September to Easter, the 16's are a challenging three-man boat with two crew allowed out on trapeze at any one time. The 16' weighs only 72kg and has over 50m2 of sail area including asymetric spinnaker. With a choice of 2 masts and sail sets, reading the weather conditions and rig choice before a race is as critical as picking the breeze and good crew work on the course. Latest developments in the 16's are square topped rigs and carbon masts.

13 Foot Skiffs

This is the feeder class for the 16', they can be sailed by kids from around 15 to men up to the age of 23 and women up to 26 or raced with a child steering and their parent crewing. Racing each saturday from September to Easter, the 13's are a two-man boat with one crew allowed out on trapeze at any one time. A one-design boat weighing only 68kg with approximately 25m2 of sail area, including asymetric spinnaker, the challenge is focused on sailing and crew-work skills.

Sunday - Junior Racing and Learning

Flying 11's

Sailed each Sunday from September until Easter, this is a fast, lightweight, one-design dinghy, with three sails including a 'square' or symetrical spinnaker. The 11's are a two-man boat sailed cometitively, from 10 to 18 years old, with a target crew weight of between 75 and 115kg.

29er's

This is a transition class designed for school-aged kids who have outgrown their Flying 11's or want to round off their sailing skills. Our objective is to introduce them to and help build their skills in the techniques of trapeze, asymetric spinnaker and steering a planing boat, which are required for the 13ft and 16ft skiffs.

Manly Juniors

Fantastic little boats with three sails including a square or symmetrical spinnaker, these are great for teaching kids from approximately 7 to 14 years old, skills that will take them onto any boat. The focus is on fun, friendship and building the basics. Each Sunday from September until Easter, our Rookie fleet earns their wings off the club deck before progressing to the racing fleet, out in Middle Harbour.

 "Poppies"

The ideal starter boat, tough and simple plastic Optimists, with one sail but able to be sailed by one or two or children, depending on their size. The focus is on water safety skills and the basic points of sail, to build confidence. The Poppies are offered for use in the club programme, free of charge.
